The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship Fund
Jadarius McCoy, 2016 Scholarship Recipient

The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial scholarship is all about giving back to the young people in our Guilford County community.  Golf tournaments on all levels seek to be involved in community charitable activities.  The Cardinal Amateur has been a leader in this endeavor dating back to 1983 when the first educational scholarship was announced.  The scholarship began as a one-time $1000 award in 1983 to the current $2,500 award renewable for 4 years for a total scholarship of $10,000.  The non-profit scholarship is administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro and is open to any rising college freshman graduating from a Guilford County high School.  The award is based primarily on the basis of need.  The O’Briant Scholarship is funded by the Cardinal Amateur, Presented by McConnell Golf, as well as corporate and private donations.  To date, 35 students have been awarded $136,500 toward higher education.

The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship selection committee is pleased to announce the 2016 recipient, Jadarius McCoy, who is a recent graduate of High Point Central high school. While in high school, Jadarius was a member of the Marching Band and was the recipient of the Leadership award and Blue Crush dedication award. In addition, he participated in the school concert and jazz bands and was a member of the yearbook staff. Jadarius volunteered as a mentor for the Higher Learning Institute and was a tutor with elementary age students after school and during the summer. While at High Point Central he took AP classes and achieved a weighted G.P.A. of 4.125 graduating 65th out of a class of 300.  He was inducted into the National Society of High School scholars. Jadarius will attend N.C. A&T University in the fall where he plans to major in journalism with a public relations concentration.  Jadarius hopes his legacy to young people will be “your surroundings do not have to predestine your future.”

The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Scholarship selection committee is also pleased to announce the renewal of scholarships to Kelly Stewart (2013) attending UNC-CH, to Sarah Harrell (2014) attending Appalachian State University, and to Jeffery Daniel Meadows (2015) attending NC A&T University. Congratulations to all of these outstanding students.

Tax-deductible contributions to the Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship can be made at any time throughout the year at Sedgefield Country Club (Ross or Dye course). Anyone wishing to make a donation in honor or memory of family or friends is encouraged to consider the Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship.
